Professional help for post trauma

Professional treatment for post trauma: the first step is not easy

Although entering appropriate professional treatment is very important for victims of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (P.T.S.D.), the process is not as simple as it might appear at first glance. First, the victim must acknowledge the need for professional assistance. Many people, including trauma victims, do not hurry to seek professional psychological treatment because psychological therapy is still accompanied by a negative social stigma, because they consider beginning therapy an admission of weakness, because the uncertainty inherent in therapy causes anxiety or because beginning therapy means taking a step in the opposite direction from the avoidance they have been using until now.

In addition, it is not always easy to find a professional who understands the issue of trauma and the accompanying phenomena nor is it easy to develop closeness with and trust in a stranger.
Furthermore, P.T.S.D. is multi-faceted and its influence is likely to include components that are personal (symptoms), interpersonal (family relationships) and societal (difficulties at work and in society). Victims are different from each other and experience different symptoms with varying intensity and therefore a professional evaluation is necessary in order to map the victim’s needs and refer him to the type of therapy most appropriate for his situation.

The treatment stages

In general, the treatment of trauma victims will include one or more of the following stages:

Waiting and supervision: In many cases, symptoms pass without intervention.
Building trust and a therapeutic relationship
Knowledge is power: The more the trauma victim knows about and understands what he is experiencing, the better he will be able to cope.
Trauma-focused therapy (dealing with painful memories and situations of avoidance)
Dynamic therapy to help the victim create new meaning for the trauma
Preparation for the possibility of reactivation (return of symptoms as a result of various life-events) and dealing with it.
Managing immediate, severe trauma
